Other Requirements for Graduation

Curriculum is subject to change without notice.
SELF-NURTURING
Our graduate candidates are required to practice daily some form of self-nurturing, such as meditation, guided imagery, journaling, exercise such as walking, running, Tai Chi, yoga, aerobics, or whatever best suits you. This requirement is for stress management, self-discovery, and the well being that is essential in effective healing work. Your advisor may be able to recommend optional self-nurturing programs to help you fill this requirement.
MUSIC LESSONS
If you are not yet musically ready to play for patients, lessons with a teacher of your choice are required. If you are uncertain whether or not you need lessons, the MHTP staff will help you ascertain your status. Students are responsible for their own lessons.
REQUIRED READING REVIEWS
Two books should be chosen from the  selections listed below for each of the five modules. (Note that for Modules 2 and 3, one of the two books is required.  The student should read that book, plus one other from that module's list.)  The two books must be read before each module. A 300-word review of each book must be sent by mail or email to the student's Advisor. In the review the student might discuss what was learned from the book. Was it exciting, enlightening, inspiring? What was useful (or not)? Would the student recommend it to other readers?

In addition, the book Alfred's Essentials of Music Theory, by Andrew Surmani, Karen Farnum Surmani and Morton Manus (ISBN # is 0882848976) is required as pre-work for Module 2.

INTERNSHIP

Students are required to complete all modules, submit all book reviews, and complete the Module Exam before beginning their clinical internship. The advisor and Practicum supervisor will determine if the student’s musical skills are adequate for internship. A demonstration of the student’s readiness for internship may be requested.

For graduation, 45 hours of clinical experience in a medical facility are required. Previous experience noted in the Student Application may lead to waiving up to 5 hours of the required internship hours. In this case, the student must have over 20 hours of documented previous musical bedside experience deemed appropriate by the Registrar.

Interns are provided with an Internship Packet in Module 4. The packet contains a copy of the Patient Log and materials to be presented to healthcare facility personnel where the student is interning.

Patient Logs are to be kept by the student and copies of the logs, in batches of 10, are to be submitted to the advisor. Students should read the Patient Log instructions carefully, and each Log should be completed appropriately. There should be one Log sheet for each patient.

The On-Site Supervisor’s Report, describing the CMP intern’s bedside work, is to be sent directly from the intern’s supervisor at each internship healthcare facility to the Advisor Administrator.

Interns may not solicit payment for their service unless special circumstances warrant permission from the Registrar.

Students may do their internship in a hospital, nursing home, hospice, or other medical setting where they can play at the bedside.

The advisor will assist the student in planning the internship.

MHTP strongly prefers that all 45 hours be done one-on-one with individual patients. However, if this is not possible, the student may do 30 hours one-on-one and up to 15 hours in small groups of no more than three patients. The student must complete a separate Patient Log for each patient in the group. The student must also obtain approval from his/her advisor prior to using group settings for any portion of the internship hours.

Students may need to obtain their own liability/malpractice insurance.

The MHTP internship is considered an independent study separate from MHTP. Students do the internship on their own time and are personally responsible and accountable for their actions during the course of study. MHTP is not responsible or accountable for the student's actions while completing the MHTP course of study, while performing music at the bedside, and/or actions which may stem from perceived instructions other than what is taught in the MHTP curriculum.

Responsibilities of Students to Internship Sites:

The student should act in a responsible and professional manner, such as arriving on time, being prepared, and interacting well with the staff.

The student should display the ability to be compassionate and caring with patients and families.

The student should adhere to all policies and procedures of the site.

A LIST OF YOUR REPERTOIRE
This list should be organized according to the four Patient Categories discussed in the Repertoire Development class in Module 1: Critically ill, Chronically ill, Elderly/Children, and Dying.

At least 90 minutes of playing time must be learned and practiced regularly for the categories.

This list may include music that has been lengthened through repetition or improvisation. Some overlap may occur from one category to another. At least one category may be chosen as the student’s area of specialty.

The list must be sent to the Advisor after the completion of all modules, and the Advisor will assess it before the student’s internship is begun.

GRADUATE RECORDING

The recording tape is an audiotape or CD 30 minutes long, but no more than 30 minutes long, with good sound quality, with the music clearly discernible.

The tape or CD should demonstrate your ability and understanding of therapeutic music as taught in MHTP rather than the extent of your repertoire. It should be expressive, with suitable dynamics, and does not have to be mistake-free.

You must include music of all Four Categories equally (music for the Dying, Chronically ill, Critically ill and Elderly/Children).

You may do improvisation as long as you demonstrate your understanding and ability in each category.

The recording should be labeled with the student’s name and the student should include a list of its contents, including separate categories and titles of pieces in each category..

The recording should be sent to the Advisor after completion of the internship. The Advisor will approve the recording or discuss any changes that may be needed.

A FINAL SUMMARY REPORT ON WHAT YOU HAVE GAINED FROM THE PROGRAM
This is a one-page report summarizing your experience of the Program, what you learned or gained, a description of your self-nurturing practices and any constructive criticism or feedback you might have for improving the Program.
MODULE EXAM

This is a short written exam that covers information from all the modules and is mandatory for graduation. It is taken upon completion of all modules and before beginning the internship. When the student has completed all modules, the student informs his/her Advisor. The Advisor reviews the student’s module evaluation forms and ensures the student has satisfactorily completed all module requirements.  The Advisor  then mails or emails the exam to the student, who  returns the exam to the Advisor  when completed.

FINAL APPROVAL & CERTIFICATION

When the student has completed all modules, internship hours and logs, book reviews, graduation recording, repertoire list, Module Exam, Final Summary Report, and has received a favorable evaluation interview report from the Advisor, the Graduation Committee will advise the Board to issue the Music Practitioner Certificate.

This certificate indicates to healthcare professionals that the student has the clinical and musical knowledge necessary to do CMP work effectively and appropriately.

MHTP certification is restricted to the instrument used during the module training, clinical practicum and clinical internship.

The student will  receive a CMP pin, certificate, and a packet of information from the Graduate Administrator.
