Module 2: Music as a Language

This Module 2 will be held via videoconference, which you can attend from your own home computer. See what you need to attend MHTP videoconference modules.

This is part of the MHTP core curriculum. You must first be accepted as a student in order to register for this Module. Learn more about applying to MHTP.

Music as a Language (15 hours)

Students will learn the language of music as it applies to being a Music Practitioner, while delving into music theory, improvisation, elements of music, and experiential composition and playing/singing.

When the language of music is fundamentally understood, appropriate uses of music may be applied to meet the immediate needs of a patient. By breaking down the elements of music and realizing the power of each element, students learn to appreciate the simplicity of therapeutic music: "less is more." Students learn that music is naturally able to elicit responses in the human body.

Pre-work for Module 2

  • See the Module 2 pre-work list in the MHTP Handbook for specifics regarding the book that students are required to read…

  • …and the music theory workbook that must be completed before Module 2.

  • If this is your first module, then you will be also contacted by your advisor to be welcomed to the program and given additional information to prepare.

Important considerations for module registration

A student must register for each Module at least one month in advance of the Module date. There is a $30 late fee for registrations and tuition payments after the one month deadline, except for first-time registrations. Please also note that MHTP classes are limited to 15 students so that our Teachers can best serve our students. Submitting an application well in advance of the scheduled Modules will ensure your place in the program.
